How current are these Etna webcam images?
The stills come from the INGV Osservatorio Etneo volcanic surveillance network and are updated by INGV roughly every 10 minutes. Each image shows the network's last-update time in UTC; this page re-checks for new frames every few minutes.
What is the difference between visible and thermal cameras?
Visible cameras show what the eye would see and are most useful in daylight and clear weather. Thermal cameras image heat, so they reveal lava fountains, flows and hot ash even at night or through light cloud — during eruptions the thermal views are often the most informative.
Why is a camera offline or showing no image?
Summit-area equipment lives in a harsh environment: power, weather, ash and lightning routinely knock cameras out, and INGV also performs maintenance. Offline cameras are reported here exactly as the source reports them.
