Does an Etna eruption always close Catania Airport?
No. Etna erupts frequently and the airport usually keeps operating. Impact depends on where the ash goes: closures or restrictions happen mainly when wind carries ash over the airport or its approach sectors. A RED aviation colour code describes the volcano, not the airport.
What happens when volcanic ash does affect the airport?
Typical measures, in increasing severity: closure of specific airspace sectors, a cap on hourly arrivals (for example 12 aircraft per hour), suspension of departures or arrivals, and in significant events a temporary full closure while runways and aprons are cleared of ash.
