Any near-surface plume would generally be transported toward the ESE. Wind-derived indication from surface-level model wind — NOT an official ash forecast. Official ash movement always comes from Toulouse VAAC (see Volcanic Ash section).

How to read ETNA WATCH — common questions about Etna monitoring
Is Mount Etna erupting right now?
The status header at the top of this page shows the current dashboard interpretation, derived from the latest official INGV VONA notice and Toulouse VAAC ash advisory, each with its issue time. It is refreshed every few minutes. It is not an official alert level — for authoritative information always consult INGV Osservatorio Etneo.
What does the aviation colour code (GREEN, YELLOW, ORANGE, RED) mean?
The aviation colour code is issued by INGV in VONA (Volcano Observatory Notice for Aviation) messages. GREEN means normal, non-eruptive state; YELLOW means signs of elevated unrest; ORANGE means heightened unrest or a minor eruption; RED means a significant eruption is imminent or underway, typically with ash emission into the atmosphere. The current code and the full notice history are shown in the VONA section above.
Is Catania Airport open during Etna eruptions?
Usually yes. A RED aviation colour code does not automatically close the airport — restrictions such as sector closures or reduced hourly arrivals are decided operationally and communicated by the airport operator (SAC). This dashboard reports Catania Airport status only from those official airport communications, shown with their timestamps in the Airport section.
What is volcanic tremor and why does it matter?
Volcanic tremor is a continuous seismic vibration linked to the movement of magma and gas inside the volcano. INGV-OE publishes official 7-day RMS amplitude graphs from its permanent stations (the reference station ECPN carries green/yellow/medium/red amplitude bands). Rising tremor often accompanies eruptive episodes, but high tremor alone does not mean an eruption is occurring — official INGV communications take precedence.
Where does the ash cloud forecast come from?
From the Toulouse Volcanic Ash Advisory Centre (VAAC), which issues official advisories for Etna with the observed ash cloud extent and flight levels plus forecasts at +6, +12 and +18 hours. This page parses the latest advisory and draws its ash polygons on the map. Surface wind shown in the weather section is only a general indication and never overrides VAAC forecasts.
Where does this data come from and how fresh is it?
All data is aggregated server-side from official public sources: INGV Osservatorio Etneo (tremor graphs, VONA, communications, weekly bulletins), the INGV FDSN earthquake service, Toulouse VAAC, SAC/Catania Airport communications and Open-Meteo. Sources are polled every 2–10 minutes and every card shows its own source link and update time; stale data is explicitly flagged. ETNA WATCH is an independent aggregator and is not affiliated with any of these institutions.
