Volcanic tremor is the continuous seismic vibration produced by magma and gas moving inside the volcano, and it is one of the most-watched indicators of Etna's internal state: sustained rises often accompany lava fountains and ash emission. INGV Osservatorio Etneo publishes the official RMS tremor amplitude graphs below, regenerated continuously from its summit-area stations. INGV publishes no numeric feed, so the official graphs are shown exactly as issued — never re-drawn or estimated.

What is volcanic tremor?

Volcanic tremor is a continuous seismic vibration — different from the discrete jolts of earthquakes — generated by magma and gas moving through the volcano's plumbing. On Etna, tremor amplitude is one of the most reliable indicators of how intense the activity is: rapid, sustained rises typically accompany lava fountains and ash emission from the summit craters.

How do I read the graphs?

Each graph shows the RMS amplitude of the seismic signal over the last 7 days, on a logarithmic scale, recorded by a summit-area station. The reference station ECPN carries INGV's official green/yellow/red bands classifying the tremor level as low, medium or high. The generation time of each graph is shown below the image.

Why are there no numeric values?

INGV publishes no public numeric tremor feed — the graphs are the official product. This page displays them exactly as issued, never re-drawing them or extracting values, so what you see is always the official data and never our estimate.

Does high tremor mean Etna is erupting?
